Honestly, the 944 8-valve just isn't a very powerful engine in NA form and when combined with the rather heavy weight of the cars that late into the model run and a 3-speed Automatic you get a GT cruiser, not a true sports car. Porsche did a pretty good job engineering the engine, but its not exactly high tech anymore and the cars were never stoplight racers as Porsche tends to gear them for high speed cruising and going from 5 or 6 gears to only 3 will always force a further compromise in gear selection.

Since the automatic is VW based there are some final drive and gear changes possible as well as changing tire size to alter the acceleration from a standstill at the expense of higher speeds and fuel mileage.

I would drive a 5 or 6-speed car to compare before ultimately deciding on whether to go forward with the purchase. Also there are different gearsets used in the 5-speeds to allow tailoring to your driving style which can help with the acceleration.
VW based ,?? came from an Audi 5000 model as far as I know, the auto is not a bad drive with the 2.7 ,found mine very good, pulled well from a standstill.
The gearing is set for the auto by the factory ,don't believe it suffers against the manual for that,i have owned both....
I really think the 2.7 has more torque and hp than the data suggests, perhaps a marketing coverup..maybe just me
