I have had mixed experiences with dealerships. I really like the Porsche dealer I go to. I know everyone by name, I get discounts, loaners and the work is top shelf.
I also have a VW Passat that I have taken to the local VW dealer, an independent shop and I have done work myself. The biggest difference on the surface between the dealer and independent shop: the independent shop has a slightly lower labor cost and he gets lower part cost. The total difference isn't that much. I have a direct relationship with the independent shop owner - he shows me what is wrong with the car. The dealer, not so much.
If I don't get the service or workmanship I expect, I walk. find someone else.
Buying a new car is a difference experience - they are much all the same, it is just that some are nicer than others.
