Gacook was not claiming GoT uses violence and gore to depict the dragon era, which he obviously knows not to be real. Instead, Gacook was stating that GoT uses violence and gore to depict the middle-ages, which was real, and is roughly the context in which GoT takes place, i.e. knights, castles, horses, swords, wizards (although fictitious), etc...

I agree with Gacook that the middle-ages was a trying time for humanity, and the violence and gore helps to make its depiction, and thus GoT, realistic for viewers.
