You said you were "interested". That means maybe. A maybe with no deposit or commitment.
Did he promise to keep it for you? Did you promise to buy it? if not, you were nothing more than another POTENTIAL customer.
He had a sure thing and went with it.
It would be nice if he had waited to see if you eventually wanted to buy it or not, but he wouldn't be in business very long if he acted like that.
