This is how Grady got involved in my cross country road trip three years ago. I knew from this post that he really was checking in with my thread each day. He PMd me his phone number in case I had problems and needed help. This to a complete stranger... A wonderful soul indeed. I wish my son and I could have stopped for a visit with him....'

“First, eastern Washington is likely the flatest, seemingly most desolate piece of road we have driven.”

Columbia River

Eastern Washington, yes –desolate.
More starkly abused than the Badlands of SD.

These are the Channeled Scablands where Glacial Lake Missoula emptied with volume of water equal to Lake Michigan ALL AT ONCE and repeatedly.

In the town on Missoula, MT, there are ancient shorelines WAY up on the mountainside (near the ‘M’).
Each shoreline represents an annual shore of the rising water of the last flood (~20K years ago).

This flash flood overtopped the Columbia River Gorge at the peak flow.
Where you are standing, the water was 100’+ deep and flowing 100 mph for a few days/weeks!

There are some great PBS and other videos on this subject, available on-line.
Even living in Colorado, this is interesting enough for me to belong to:
Ice Age Floods Institute Ice Age Floods Institute: Welcome

Best,
Grady
