I'm certainly no expert on head porting, but from what little I've managed to learn over the years, it sounds like you are on the right track. Most references I've read and folks who claim to know the voodoo magic of this pretty much agree with what you are doing - just clean them up, really, eliminating the sharp edges, casting imperfections, and that kind of thing. From what I understand that, and some attention in the valve guide area (your "upside down boat") makes for some real gains without risking ruining the heads. "Size matters" - don't make them bigger, just make them smoother. When I looked at what Baisely did on my Sportster heads, and what Mark Sutton did on my Ducati heads, that's all they really did.
