If you're a guy, you've got two options: backpack or canvas messenger/bicycle bag. A backpack is for use when you have to carry a bunch of stuff and you're constantly on the move.
The courier bag is for use only in transit, and doesn't need to go with what you're wearing because once you get where you're going, you'll secure it somewhere. There should be no confluence of events where you're dressed up so much a backpack would look wrong
and you're constantly hauling something around.
A bag of stuff you have to carry everywhere you go, to the point it has to match what you're wearing in various situations? Yeah, that's a purse.
