It is a 6 speed in the back with a 13-26 freewheel and 42/53 in the front. Has standard 50th Annv. pedals with straps, but for the 1st ride i put some clipless pedals on due to not having any old school shoes.
I havent ridden a steel bike in 20 years and this was a treat. Like butter over any surfaces. Didn't really notice the 21 pounds. 1st ride was 50 miles over a familiar route and set 34 Strava
PR's! Must have been the gearing since my other bikes have compact cranks.
Tried a 7 speed freewheel, but chain was only .015 away from the chainstay.
I didn't have the opportunity to leave it as I found it. Spent over 10 years trying to find a 64-65 cm Masi to replace the one I had in the '80s. The frame I found was in a shed by the beach and had a ton of rust all over it including missing brake cable eyes and sheared off and rusted dropout screws.
I had Rob Robertson (past Masi frame builder) repair these, replace the stripped bottle bosses and add a pump peg, all with original Masi parts he still had. I built this to ride on occasion so built the wheels with clinchers instead of the period favorite sew-ups.
Overall was a fun project
