Suspect you are on the right track with the missing wire.
Can you confirm the DME itself is getting power? Are you getting spark or power at the coils under cranking - that would be easy for which to check?
About a decade ago, I had a situation where I initially wired the DME to a terminal in the fuse panel that doesn't see power under cranking (like an accessory power source). The engine would only catch after letting off of the starter. That was initially puzzling.
