This is true, but .......
Gasoline that is created through some reforming processes is unstable and breaks down over time and the 1 octane point per month is accurate for the first couple of points, then the degrading starts to slow and eventually stabilizes at around 85 or 86, prolly won't go much under that until it evaporates off and leaves nothing but wax and varnish.
But your point is valid, the gas is too old. Replace it.
