My wife (grew up in Boston) has always like the Eliot Hotel, as widgeon mentioned above. I liked the Lenox (also in Back Bay area) when I stayed there a few years ago. Most of Boston is within walking distance, so like POP wrote, you're better off without a car for parking cost reasons. The Eliot is in Back Bay IIRC, which is across the Commons from Beacon Hill. Maybe a 10-15 min walk. Faneuil Hall/waterfront/Haymarket neighborhood is probably a 15-20 min walk from that hotel. Or you can take the subway (the T).
