Shaun, the Boxster is a great car. I personally think mine was the most fun Porsche that I've owned. Like the 996 they are way too quiet stock, intake and exhaust mods make them feel like a proper Porsche. The Boxster has an intake silencer that can be removed in about 5 minutes with simple hand tools and gives it a nice little howl over your left shoulder. You can also do the "Fister mod", a partial muffler bypass that gives a great sound at WOT but subtle at cruise. A local shop did mine for $60 on both 996 cans.
This thread from 6speedonline is the most comprehensive list of 986/996 component weights that I've seen. It's on the 996TT forum, but basically everything forward of the front seats is the same on the 986. I think it would be a challenge to get that much weight out of a 986 without getting crazy. I bet 100-150 lbs would be pretty easy by removing the spare, swapping for lightweight seats, and lightweight wheels.
