I just use a large adjustable wrench. I don't remember anything odd about the nuts, other than one is a inside fit and one a flanged compression nut. They do take a bit of force to get them off. There is no place for a back up wrench on the tank side, so I guess we just have to hope it is on there solid. I don't know if your '70 is different than my '67. Good luck!
