Don't scratch the paint away from the stamping. Use paint remover. Disturbing the metal surface will raise more questions. Your friend may just have a 1969 Sportomatic S, which has significant value. If it was a '69-built car and not registered in the US until 1970, the registration could be the only thing wrong.
