Happened to my cousin after an auto accident. He was in an extended care facility in Tarzana for over 5 years. Me and him were very close and it would kill me every time I'd visit, his eyes would just roll around staring at the ceiling, I always felt he was never really "in there". To see the other poor souls in the same predicament (they were all in comas, mostly auto/mc accidents) was extremely depressing.
Fortunately my aunt and uncle (divorced, not so amicably) finally came to their senses and had his feeding tube removed. Still haunts me to this day.
