I bought my 1983 SC in Ct 12 ? years ago which was a good experience. The state has some great driving/ biking roads if you look for them. I pass thru the state often there are good things about it. Although, somehow, there is a sort of old puritan thing, I can't quite put my finger on it. New Haven has the most amazing old pizza place, Frank Pepe's. It's been there since the 1930's.
I know a great mechanic for 914's in East Hartford: Tangerine Racing. Might be worth it to get a 914, if you have the desire, since you will be there and Tangerine Racing is there and Lime Rock is not too far away.
