I would avoid staying IN Meriden if you can. There are plenty of surrounding towns that are a very quick commute to Meriden with no need to get on the highway.
I am from Durham and can be in Meriden in 10 minutes. We share a school system with Middlefield (another small town option) which sits between Durham and Meriden. Durham/Middlefield are small towns with friendly people.....and a quick drive to the shore. Cheshire & Wallingford are good options - larger towns with more "city" perks like parks and so forth.
As others have mentioned....don't register your cars here. I pay over $3K/yr in car taxes. My father's Ferrari 575 is north of $4K alone!
