How is it now?
When I left a decade ago, Oakland downtown was empty.
Business were boarded up, there was a cop car on every corner, and because of the f'n traffic-light timing you could drive exactly 1 block every 5 minutes on the average.
I considered buying property near East O-town at one point, and drove through there a bit.
There were some affordable hidden jems but the neighborhood was mixed:
-One block would have burnt out rustbuckets on blocks, with homies standing around drinking in the middle of the road.
-The next block would be new white picket fences with an escalade in the drive, art coffee shops, and kids writing chaulk on the sidewalk.
