Buying my first house was the smartest thing I ever bought. I was so broke for a long time it was stupid but I was not renting anymore. It is difficult to buy a house on a single income. Especially in the days of 15% mortgages. I got lucky and got a great deal, only 12.5% interest.
One of my friends with crappy credit was paying 16% for his mortgage.
