Rye isn't made from rye anymore, it's made from corn. Some distillers use a bit of rye, but the flavour and colour come from the barrels. There's a microdistillery in Niagara wine country we visited recently. They sell rye made from rye and aged in metal vats - it's as clear as water. I already knew rye is made from corn, but the guy at the counter explained the bit about using small amounts of rye, vs. a complete rye-made whiskey like they had.
