I think that turning it the wrong direction will do internal harm. To be sure, pull the distributer cap and see which one of the plugs will fire next (assuming you know the firing order) if you proceed either clockwise or counterclockwise. - has to do with the timing chains?
Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will chime in.
