I doubt the rebuilt one has "new" ring and pinion but maybe a good used one. Rebuilt usually means new bearings, seals, and syncros. In regards to a good used one, a very good indicator is the magnet on the side cover, once the cover is removed the magnet can be inspected and if any heavy buildup of metal paste or chunks of metal is obviously a bad sign. I'll not only be able to test drive this tranny but also inspect it internally. For further preventative maintenance switch to a good synthetic gear oil such as amsoil.
