Seriously, I agree... the best first thing you can do is get some impossible-to-kick-in doors... steel preferably... with steel frames and long throw deadbolts... no glass in and around the door unless you're gonna have a keyed deadbolt on the inside and you don't leave the key in it ever. Every door needs to adhere to these qualifications, not just the front.
If you're not married to the idea of storm doors, ditch them and mount the steel doors as outswinging doors. Even more impossible to kick in.
On windows low enough for easy break in access, figure out a way to make it more difficult or impossible to get in. We've got bars on the only two of ours easy enough to get to without a ladder. They're not the typical jaildoor type, they follow the lines of the mullions and don't stand out much.
The dudes that built castles would laugh at cameras... they'd spend their efforts making the doors/drawbridge stronger, right?
