My experience with BMW cars is almost exclusively from the E28 and E36 lines - which are obviously ancient by today's standards. Even so, I'd really consider a newish 135i.

This has been my experience as well. My German made S4 was an amazing vehicle. The Mexican made Jetta was clearly the worst vehicle I've ever owned (and I've had beauties like a Bronco II and early 90's civic to compare against).
