The price of a helmet has little to do with its ability to protect your gourd. Stuarts reference above would have doubtful been any different regardless of helmet brand or cost. I believe most manufacturers recommend replacement every 5 years as long as helmet isn't damaged. 2 years seems wasteful...especially for occasional riders.
Common sense and good defensive riding skills are the best safety device you can have. A top safety rated lid can be had for under $500 easily.
One of the best things about riding is the opportunity to rid yourself of all the electronic wizardry that clogs our normal lives. Having all that crap built in and strapped to your melon is the last thing I'd want distracting me from an enjoyable ride.
