I really appreciate your insight and pressed each shop I've spoken with over the last two years as to whether stripping the car to bare metal was really necessary. All came to the same conclusion so I concluded that it was a necessity, and not a shop's particular preference.
The car has 60K original miles; I'm the second owner since 1986.
