I looked at eBay since you started this thread, yesterday(?). Within 500 miles of here is the worst place possible to look for clean old German cars. North of SF bay it starts to get a lot better but of course there are exceptions to everything.

I bought the clean '79 MB 300SD I'm sitting in right now from Napa on CL, sight unseen w/ no PPI, pay palled the $$ while I was on the phone with her and found a shipper on uship. All based on a few crappy photos. I knew exactly what I was looking at and I scored. Every time I park it, someone comments and tells me the story of the one they had back in the day. Incredibly rich people admire it to no end. Long distance CL score.
