I would not count anything out.
However, I just hooked my Robinaire up to my gauges - but not on a car - opened the manifold valves and turned the pump on. It took 1/2 second to pull the gauges to over (under?) minus 30 on the Robinaire gauges.
His pump is in the same league as mine with 2.5 CFM vs 3 CFM. I think he is pulling a good old fashioned vacuum, at least on the high side.
