I got the information I needed, so hopefully this can help people give me advice.
The $3500 tranny was rebuilt 1 year ago. It has been used for one season of track events, about 1000 miles. It was rebuilt in Cleveland by a shop called Steinels (spelling?). Does anybody in the Cleveland area have experience with this shop (especially with their tranny work)?
It is being sold out of a track car that the owener is selling, he wants to sell the tranny separate, put back in the original trans and sell it that way. The owner is a PCA member and one of the local instructors (he was at the DE I went to, but I haven't met him yet).
Other information- like I said, gears 3,4,5 are shorter in ratio, knocking about 12mph off top speed. I believe the gears are powerhaus (spelling?), will know for sure when I talk to the owner (I have only talked to my mechanic who talked to him). The ring and pinion are included and stuff. Also, he is pretty sure it has an LSD, and may have been "bumped to 80%" (whatever that means). My current trans does not have LSD
So assuming all of this is true when I confirm, is this worth it over the rebuild of my tranny ($2000)? I could then sell mine to somebody who wants it (still works, but needs bearings, gaskets, syncros and stuff) for maybe $500? I also would hope I can talk him down on the price.
Any help/advice based on this more specific information would be greatly appreciated, and would save countless kittens from an untimely demise.
HIGHBOOST- I might be selling my current tranny depending on what I decide, so if your'e interested I could let you know what I decide.
