I've been surprised by several things. I had an '88 911 targa. The top was not quiet (much more so after Dan Petchel restored it, but still...) or water tight. I then moved on to 2 different miata, both were quite loud at speed top up or down. I was amazed by how tight and quiet the boxster soft top is. I drove the car this morning first with the soft top up. I didn't bother with the top down. I will eventually drive it with the top down, but usually only early morning (I try to never be awake early morning) or in the evening after sundown when it's cool. Anyway, the soft top is extremely quiet, and from inside the car, you felt like you were in something with a metal roof. I then drove the car with the hard top on and it was also quiet, but I don't know that it was that much more quiet. The tops on this thing are excellent!
The sound, oh my, the sound. When cruising at a steady speed, it's very quiet inside, but if you roll into the throttle a bit, the sound is quite glorious and that's without the sport exhaust enabled. With the sport option enabled, spectacular, especially with the windows down.
