This is a good post and list.
The cars I have seen break down most often on long drives are the garage queens that get driven the least.

I keep the car in good running condition so many of the things that make other people's lists fall into my "why the hell did you LEAVE with the fuel line leaking, brakes worn out, etc?" grouping. Here is what I would bring.

1. AAA card (or applicable where you are traveling), cell phone and internet access device. No one is more helpful than the Pelicans when you travel.
2. assorted hand tools including small voltmeter, some wire to make a jumper(s) with, duct tape, electrical tape, lug nut socket, fuses, relays including fuel pump relay, proper European base bulbs for tail lights/etc., and zip ties.
3. A couple of assorted size clamps, CV joint bolts. Those seem to be odd/hard to find if they back out and are lost.
4. Fan belt, a quart of oil, fuel filter.
5. A piece of cardboard to lay on. Put it under your carpet in the front trunk and forget about it until you need to lay down in the gravel.
6. Scissor jack with a few wood blocks as pads. I prefer this to the factory jack any day.

Almost everything fits into one small too bag.

That's about it. These are solid cars, not some namby-pampy over-rated flaky exotic. I've driven mine damn near everywhere.
