As others have said - if the car already gets regular exercise you'll know of any issues. If it sits all the time and you decide to go on a big trip -that's a crap shoot.

Personally I love road trips. Took my '91 Turbo (80,000 miles) on a 1500 mile road trip in Summer '13 - not a single issue. Just took the car on a 800 mile all mountain pass, scenic byway, twisty 2 lane roads - didn't miss a beat - ran perfect every second.

That said - I like to bring: various vacuum hoses, hose clamps and/or zip ties, some electrical wire and a few connectors, air compressor, extra oil, and some tools - screw drivers and wrenches and such - just basic stuff in case something gets loose. A big repair - not much you can really do, realistically.

Again IMO the key is having a car that sees regular use and you'll be fine.
