The middle of the lane is oily and has more debris. Bikes ride where the car tires go. If you ride in the middle of the lane, cars cant see you as well in their mirror when changing lanes. 6-8 inches is too close but dependi g on where the rut in the road is, the bike may have wanted to be there.
