Hired for their brutal, yet disciplined tactics, the Hessians were German mercenaries who were utilized by the British Empire. A majority of the Hessians were sharpshooters, musketeers, and fusiliers. In addition, German hussars were chosen for their swift riding. They engaged in all major conflicts until 1777 when their role was changed to garrison force. Because of the British usage of Hessians, more Loyalists soon supported the Patriot cause due to the fact that non-English speaking men were brought in to fight their war.
