A lot depends on the age of the tire. From what I see the longer you drive on an old tire the wall gets destroyed. Newer maybe can handle it. Maybe a bit of luck too.

The low profile tires one my 944's came with on 17's, one night I went to make a right turn and found the tail just wanted to keep going straight. The tire didn't have visible signs that it was low, but it had about 6PSI in it.
