Last big ticket item, I get in her car and pull out of the drive, apply brakes and holy hell what's that noise
She's says, yeah it's been doing that for a couple of weeks, was going to mention it to you.

Hmm, about as long as it's been making that noise?

And it did not occur to you the two issues were related, as in the brake pads are worn completely off and what you are hearing is the brake rotor being gouged out like the f'n grand canyon?
