Finally got around to putting the new tie rod inners and ends. Fixed the excessively loose front wheel bearings while I was at it. This totally removed apparent looseness from the passenger side. Driver's side seems the same (which isn't bad). We'll see how it drives.
I managed to gum up the top of the power steering rack's main shaft with vice grips while providing counter torque for the tie rod ends. I hit it with a fine file, and I'll be going over it with fine grit sandpaper/steel wool tomorrow to smooth it out. It will still be pitted, but, given its position (on the other side of the outermost teeth), it hopefully won't be a big issue in terms of maintaining seals.
