There's customer service, and then there's trying to get someone to do automotive mechanic-type labor for free. It's one thing to ask for some advice at the counter, or to spend time looking up on the computer the right parts/applications for stuff. It's another thing to essentially ask the parts counter guy to find you the right blinker light bulb (or battery, or air filter, or wiper blades) and install it for you when there's a line of customers behind you. These people are perfectly able to pay a mechanic. They're not destitute. But they just are too cheap to do so (or too lazy to figure out how to do it themselves).
