It would have eventuated except that JR swung a deal behind Carson's back (withheld from him) for a talk show of her own.

The correct story is:
She called him BEFORE she took the show. She was friends with him and was so excited to tell someone, because this was finally her "big break". So she called Johnny. He didn't say a word. He just hung up on her. Later, when Joan would see him in public or at parties, she'd always approach him and say "Hi". He'd ignore her like she wasn't there and would just walk away...
