Somewhere someone who is into lists must have done this. I've seen lists of tools you ought to have or might want to have in your car, in case something which could be fixed on the spot breaks or fails while on the highway.

As to mechanic's tools, who is going to want to list the metric size sockets and wrenches you might want? We accumulate tools, and when we run across some size we don't have (steering wheel nut, or alternator pulley nut) in a standard 6mm to 19mm set we bought at some point, we add the new size.

For most engine building procedures, if there is a special tool you'll see it mentioned in the factory manual, or Wayne's book, or someone else's book.

I think I have about as many socket type tools that I seldom or never use as I have of the ones I use with some frequency. U jointed sockets seemed like they'd be great when I saw them in a catalog or at a tool store. Still in the tool box, but not used. But someone else may use one or more of these all the time.

So don't hold your breath for anyone to tell you what you should purchase in the abstract.
