Realistically, you're the only one with the answer. A lot of people wouldn't even think of doing this; you did, which means you think he did you a solid...and you're a decent sort who thinks of others...(good on you, brother!)
Bill D brings up a good point. Money can be kind of tacky, so if you do decide to thank your pal, maybe beer, or JW Black, (or Blue) or tickets or a good meal could substitute for cash.
