That Aluminum will bend isn't news. The article misunderstands ductility, deformation under tension. The issue is plasticity (compressive and tensile deformation). The problem is in the normal expected operation and storage conditions of the phone, the casing goes into the plastic region.

The design should be such that the normal forces on the phone will not exceed the elastic limit. This is a rigidity problem.
