I read that US cops shoot about 1,000 people per year. Looking for credible backup on that.
But we have had more than our share of shootings of deaf people ('wasn't complying; showing gang signs') and physically and mentally handicapped people (always seem to be 'reaching for cops gun' even when face down or in handcuffs) or shooting themselves while handcuffed in the back of a cop car. The worst ones are the cops invading the wrong house and shooting random people or their dogs. There's an "entitlement mentality" with some cops, and giving them military surplus equipment could be part of the problem.
