Colorado is one of my very favorite states. Near the top. But a lot of this great country, the parts that you see when you look out the window of a x-country jet, are just truly in the middle of freaking nowhere. Not where you want to have car trouble and spend a few days twirling your thumbs in a motel.
I've BTDT. These stretches suck to drive through, you certainly don't want to stop. Like the stretch from Des Moines to Denver. Then it gets real pretty from Denver in just about any direction but east.
