yup, pretty much called it.

you see, a huge pet peeve of mind is absurd predictions which never turn out to be true, but the folks making them constantly make them, which means every once in a while, they are right, and the point to that one time they were right as a sign they know what they are talking about it. when they have made insane predictions hundreds, even thousands of times, while being wildly wrong.

meanwhile, the most obvious answer, electrical problems leading to fire and eventual loss of aircraft possibly due to negligence of the operators, the most obvious, and basic answer to what happen, remains the obvious and basic answer.

so every once in a while, when someone says something insane that turns out to not be true, its worth it to remind them, that they are dead wrong most of the time.
I agree with you- the most obvious and likely answer is calamitous failure on the aircraft. However, I had dinner and too many reds with my friend the 777 driver about 10 days ago as he blew through town. His view, and apparently a widely held one in the business, is that this (a calamitous failure) is highly unlikey, and that given the sequence of events known to have taken place on the aircraft, it was a human intervention.

To my surprise, he did not discount some of the wilder theories- including that if the pilot (whoever that was) had pointed the aircraft at Diego Garcia and not deviated, the thing would have been blown from the sky.
