Installing transmission, coupler won't slide onto drive shaft

When I removed the transmission on my 1987 924S, the coupler slid easily off the drive shaft. Now I am reinstalling the transmission. I have the transmission bolted to the drive shaft bell housing. I have not yet bolted the transaxle to the frame because clarks's garage says to do that after installing the coupler. But I can't get the coupler to slide from the transaxle shaft onto the drive shaft. I found this thread about the same problem: 795663-transaxle.html

However, I am still not able to get the coupler on. Does it matter if the coupler is not lined up the way it was when it came off? Aren't all the splines the same width? Does it help to raise and lower the transaxle slightly? Is it possible to tap the coupler on? Any other advice? I really don't want to drop the transaxle again. I appreciate any advice.
