I've learned to sleep with a .45 (round chambered/safety off) in my left hand and a M629 in my right hand (for bear invasions) but it took decades of practice for me not to conk any bedmates during my sleep

. Actually my handspoons are locked away (theft would really bother me...don't want 'em "on the street") and a lever action .357 is always handy. I've got a coyote that makes random appearances and that's when I switched over a few years ago. I'm a VERY light sleeper and wide awake if a frog farts...no way is someone going to pose a threat without me having time to react appropriately. Hope I never have to...
