I have a neighbor who didn't believe me about the round in chamber. He went with me to the range, I had him lay his spoon on the bench rest with an empty chamber, I had mine hot in a holster. I called contact and two other friends started rapid fire for distraction. By the time he'd placed his first shot, I'd easily placed three well-timed shots into my target.

As has been mentioned, a good DAO revolver is pretty much as good as it gets for personal/home defense if you're not able to spend significant amounts of time training.

Seriously, obscene amounts of time.
Here's my problem with revolvers: take a gun novice who has fired the gun before, but not recently, to the range. Put the gun on the table in front of them, put a silhouette target 15ft away and have them unload as if it were an attacker. I bet the bottom-left corner of that paper will be chewed up real good. The human-shaped solhouette, not so much.

I do agree that a semi-auto is not good without lots of practice to go with it.

I'm pro-shotgun for the above reasons. Of course, there's always the short-stroke argument to that plan. You can't win... unless you're willing to practice a lot.
