Remember when the rear u-joint went out on my full size GMC 4x4. Pulled the drive shaft off, just pulled the shaft out of the rear of the transfer case. Slapped the cap off a spray can over the rear shaft hole in the transfer case I had in the back. Threw the shaft in the back, locked the front hubs, shifted to 4 loc, and went along my merry way with front wheel drive.
It quit eating u-joints when I put a wedge mount that angled the rear diff up a little reducing the angle on that rear u-joint.
There is a center carrier bearing on the rear drive shaft of the Cayenne. It has a rubber mount. If you don't replace that rubber mount every 60K it eats the carrier bearing. The mount is $100, the bearing is $500. Deferred maintenance costs big monies.
