It has changed a bunch, but there are still some "interesting" parts of town: I was last there in 2003. I stayed at the Royal Cliff Terrace Hotel.

Honestly, the drive from Bangkok to Pattaya is a bit of a hump. I'd stay in the city and enjoy the respite rather than drive: I'd rather land on the back of a Frigate in Sea State Five at night with no horizon than play dodge-car on the way to and from Pattaya again.

All the advice above makes sense to me. I did enjoy the street markets, however, at night.
